23rd-20th century BC. A group of three bronze discoid seals, all with compartmented and open-work design, including one accompanied by a typed and signed note by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 49 x 49 x 16mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted an angular pierced handle. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a plain outer band, within which is a stylized heraldic eagle: head at the top, wings spread beneath, and tail feathers at the bottom. The head and neck are supported by two struts each, and the spaces between wings and tail are each filled with shapes based on the outer band. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a large piece and generally in very good condition. The metal is sound, and only the outer rim is a little dented; the rest comprising: one with heraldic eagle, irregular struts and simple border, inverted V-shape handle to the reverse; one with scorpion(?) to the centre formed as an elliptical body with triangular extension to one end, curved tail to the other, and two curved legs to each side, simple border to the edge, inverted V-shape border to the reverse.' 91 grams, 48-51mm (2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers, N 79, Z-140, V-792, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s. [3] Fine condition.
