Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of ten bronze seals with various shapes and designs, including eight accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (U-491) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 18 x 19 x 9mm. This is round with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted an arched suspension loop. The design, which is compartmented, shows a central circle joined to the outer rim by four struts and four dots in the quarters so created. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C> It is covered with incrustation, which could be removed. The metal appears to be sound.'; (R-775) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 18 x 14mm. This has an oval flat face, and convex back on which a stout pierced handle is mounted at irregular angle. The design on the face is compartmented, and consists of a linear pattern based on four quarters in each of which is a L-shape and a rectangle. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. The outer rim is mostly lacking, and one end is broken, but the design is still clear.'; (R-776) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 21 x 20 x 16mm. This has a roughly round flat face, and flat back on which is mounted a tall loop handle which may represent a central stalk with side leaves and a bloom on top. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface which could be removed, and the edges of the face are worn, but generally this is in good condition.'; (T-437) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 19 x 20 x 16.5mm. This has a round flat face, bevelled edges, and a convex back from which rises a stalk handle ending in a loop. There is a linear design on the face consisting of three crescents based on the rim. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. There is some incrustation on the surface, which could be removed, and the piece is in very good state of preservation.'; (T-498) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 23 x 25 x 21mm. This has a round flat face and slightly convex back, on which is mounted a stalk handle ending in an oval pierced loop. The design on the face consists of a central square with circle in the middle surrounded by four of the same linear motif. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. There is some incrustation, which could be removed, but the metal is in good condition. The piece is somewhat worn, especially the edges of the face.'; (T-499) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 26 x 26 x 10.5mm. This is a round disc with flat face and convex back in the middle of which is a pierced lug of inverted V-shape. The design on the face consists of a simple cross and our V-shapes filling the quarters so created. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is generally in good condition, though a little worn, and is a nice example of its kind.'; (D-22) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 22 x 24 x 23.5mm This has a roughly round face, now at least slightly convex, and the back is flattish with a stalk handle rising to the pierced loop handle. The design consists of abstract lines: three example of a line curling outwards: two symmetrically matched each side of a central vertical line which supports a third at one end, and divides into two strands at the other end. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2000-1500 B.C. There is some wear on the edges of the seal and handle, but generally it is in very good condition.; (B-4) Stamp Seal of Bronze, 25 x 23 x 7.5mm. This is roughly star-shaped with five points (rounded, not pointed) around the edge. The back is flat and solid, with a loop handle of grooved strip metal. The design consists of an inner circle with a band around that, then the five 'rays', perhaps meant as a stylised flower. This comes from west-central Asia, and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in fair condition: the metal is sound, but there is incrustation which could be removed.' 98 grams total, 18-29mm (3/4-1 1/4"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers D-22, T-499, T-498, T-437, R-776, R-775, U-491, B-4, Y-847, Z-145 academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
