Vintage Alcohol Advertisements LotYear: 1960Lot of two vintage alcohol advertisements Come framed❖Highland QueenThe image of Mary Queen of Scots on a prancing horse after landing at the port ofLeith in 1561 became the constant design motif for Highland Queen blended Scotch. It has appeared on every label since its launch in the late 19th century. HighlandQueen was introduced by Leith-based whisky blender Macdonald & Muir in 1893and rapidly became the company’s flagship brand. First distributed locally, HighlandQueen soon became a household name in markets around the world. In 1924-5 itwas one of a handful of blended Scotch whiskies selected for sale at the BritishEmpire Exhibition, held at Wembley, London. After the Second World War, in theface of intense competition in the blended Scotch market, Macdonald & Muirrenewed its focus on the UK market but also explored markets often overlooked bythe big industry players, such as Finland and Venezuela. The brand was relaunchedwith new packaging, presentation and label design in 1976.❖Harvey’sJohn & Robert Harvey Ltd of Glasgow who also owned the city’s Dundashill distillery.Harvey’s Special blended Scotch whisky originally came in a dark bottle with an ovallabel that sometimes carried the words: ‘An English market blend’. This evolved intoa plain white label with a thin red line leading to the image of a red wax seal. John &Robert Harvey was an old, if not the oldest, whisky business in Glasgow; and datedback to 1770. In 1902, attracted by Harvey’s blending and exporting potential, thecompany – along with its closed Dundashill distillery – were acquired by DCL.Harvey’s Special continued to be produced well into the mid-20th century.
