The Times of Vietnam is a defunct, English language newspaper which was prevalent under the regime of PresidentThe first cartoon features the then unsuspecting Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, turning around to be shocked at China’s unreliable policies. The second cartoon, based on the historic enmity of India and Pakistan, shows the two nations warring over a small piece of land viz. Ladakh, represented by a child precariously standing on the edge of the cliff. The opportunist stance of Maoist China is amply reflected in both the cartoons, evidently pointing at the global cognizance of the farcical leadership of all warring factions. It was considered to be the official mouthpiece of the Diem regime, and ceased operations after the South Vietnamese Coup in 1963. It primarily covered important events related to the Vietnam war – but also published news items and cartoons on the global geopolitical upheavals due to the volatile developmentsduring the time. Countries such as China, Russia, Laos, Cambodia, Cuba etc have foundrecurrent mention in the newspaper.India’s constant conflicts with her neighbours viz. China and Pakistan were covered extensively during the war years.
