A GILT BRONZE OF MANJUSHRI
Tibet, 14th-15th century. The bodhisattva is seated in vajrasana on a double lotus base with hands in dharmachakra mudra and two lotus flowers stemming from his shoulders, holding the book and the sword.
Provenance: Property from a private European collection. By repute, kept in the same family since at least the mid-20th century.
Condition: Few of the inlaid turquoise beads are lost. Wear as visible on the images and expected of an authentic bronze of this period. The lotus flowers holding the attributes may possible be slightly inclined towards the center. Sealed!
Weight: 199.6 grams
Dimensions: Height 10 cm
Note the remarkably fine execution of the Vajra-shaped chignon, the tiara, the earrings and the garment with its many inlaid turquoises.
Auction result comparison: Compare with a related figure of Manjushri sold via Sotheby’s New York on March 15th, 2017, in Indian, Himalayan & Southeast Asian Works of Art, lot 210.
