A MONUMENTAL GILT BRONZE OF HAYAGRIVA
Mongolia, 17th-18th century. Finely cast, incised and gilt bronze with adornments in copper repoussé, Hayagriva is striding in alidhasana on snakes over a lotus base, his six radiating arms holding various attributes such as a flaming stem or a scepter of skewed skulls.

Provenance: Colonel Yves Onno, military governor of the French garrison of Tianjin, acquired locally in Tianjin, and thence by descent in the same family. After 1907, European nations were permitted to garrison Tianjin to ensure open access to Beijing. The British maintained a brigade of two battalions and the Italians, French, Germans and Austro-Hungarians maintained under strength regiments.
Condition: Good condition with wear and abrasions to pigments, traces of use, dents, few attributes and all inlaid stones lost, the seal plate loose. Some of the adornments creased.

The deity is dressed in a tiger skin and wears a tiara of skulls, a naga is draped over the shoulders, the three bearded faces are wrathful in appearance with three eyes each and surmounted by horses’ heads with the hair in lambent flames. Note the sumptuous jewelry, previously inlaid in turquoises and corals, including the two dharmachakra on his breast and belly. The furs, snakes, horses, flaming hear, faces and skull tiara all show finely executed, original hand painting of the period.

The furs, hair, earrings and tiara are removable and executed in copper whereas the main figure is of cast and gilt bronze.
The base sealed with a double-vajra copper plate.

大型銅鎏金馬頭明王
蒙古，十七至十八世紀。鑄造精美，馬頭明王正站與蓮座上，六臂分別持有法器如寳杖、骷髏頭及火珠等。

來源：Colonel Yves Onno曾是天津法國駐軍的軍事總督，購於天津周邊，在同一家族中保存至今。
品相：品相良好，有磨損，特別是顔料方面；使用痕跡，凹痕和一些法器以及内嵌寶石已丟失，密封板丟失，局部褶皺。
