A SMALL AGATE BOWL, SONG MING
China, 13th-17th century. Finely carved as a slender oval bowl with shallow rounded sides gracefully raised on a slightly recessed base, expertly polished to a lustrous sheen.
Provenance: Hungarian Private Collection.
Condition: Good condition with few microscopic nibbles to edges and some old wear.
Weight: 32.5 grams
Dimensions: Length 8.2 cm
Note the relation of the simple yet efficient form concept, the highly precise manner in which the edges are cut and especially the mineral itself with other agate vessels dating from the Song dynasty. The exquisite translucent stone of golden-yellow and honey-brown tones highlighted with a matrix of natural milky and creamy yellow clouds and banded ripples.
Auction result comparison: Compare with an agate stem bowl from the Song dynasty sold at Christies Hong Kong, May 31st, 2017, lot 3141. Also compare with an agate bowl, possibly dating to the Song dynasty, from the collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth sold at Christies New York on March 19th, 2015, lot 597.
