Große prächtige Pendule in Boulle Technik
Height: 78 cm.
Width: 55 cm.
Depth: 26 cm.
Signed "Le Beuf/ Paris".
France, 19th century.
The case in a straight structure, but widening towards the bottom, by strong protruding pilaster stripes, which in turn stand on the backs of saddled horse figures. The front pilaster strips, on pillar-like projections, carry, like the rear pillars, three-quarter caryatid figures cast in bronze and gilded; female figures, each holding an attributive object such as a fruit or a jug in her hand. The pedestal on which the carrying horses rest, like the sides of the case, is indented at the narrow sides in a strong curvature, at the front occupied by a large curved symmetrical lambrequin with a female mascaron. Above/below the front door a lion's head with a pulling up baroque palmette. The upper part is swinging up at the sides and front, at the corners flame vases, as a crown a strong openwork baroque gallery, also decorated with four vases. The entire case is covered with tortoise-shell boulle technique, with fine tendril and foliage decoration, in between allegorical and mythological figures, grotesque decoration and the Apollo sun symbol of absolutism. Under front glazing gilded bronze flat relief depicting the two allegorical figures Abundantia with cornucopia and Scientia with book, between them globe, attribute of art and power. The two figures hold a cartouche with enamel inlay, on it the watchmaker's signature. Above it is a gilded dial in relief with white enamel cartouches, on it in dark blue Roman hours. The Arabic minutes are engraved on the outer ring. Polished movement plate, also with the maker's signature. Pendulum on metal spring suspension, strikes the half-hour and hour on a bell above the lock disc mechanism. Pendulum and key available. The pendulums in extraordinary good condition, especially the Boulle works perfectly marked. Structure and overall design probably based on the highest ranking model of the epoch Louis XIV, here in the quality of a decorative art object, like those made for the world exhibitions in Paris.
