Große römische Caesarenbüste
Height: 84.
Width: 62 cm.
Rome, second half of the 16th century.
Bust in white marble, almost life size. The face, according to Roman sculpture with high portrait character. The head slightly turned to the left, bald, with accentuated forehead wrinkles, straight nose bridge and prominent chin. Over the breastplate lies the toga, on the right shoulder with a medallion-shaped agraffe. The lower part of the toga is raised by a band, a sculpturally rare variation of the bust type. Intermediate piece to the round base, also in white marble, cut into the sides.
Overall very high quality sculptural work, whose style points to the dynasty of the 2nd-3rd century. Representation of a commander or emperor, portrait comparisons do not exclude the possibility that it is the emperor C. Messius Quintus Traianus Decius (249-251 AD). (12210111) (11)
