three-quarter portrait of the Duchess of Meiningen in widow's dress with bonnet and folded hands in an armchair with red velvet upholstery sitting in front of a dark background and looking at the observer with a concentrated facial expression. The light falls on her hands and face and forms a strong contrast to the dark clothing and the background. Slight signs of ageing, a small spot in the background. Reverse on frame inscription by hand "Duchess Marie of Sachsen-Meiningen born 1804...".

Princess Marie of Hesse-Kassel (1804-1888), daughter of Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse-Kassel (1777-1847), who reigned since 1821, and his first wife, the Prussian Princess Auguste (1780-1841).
