Französischer Maler des 18./ 19. Jahrhunderts
ALLEGORY OF TRUTH
Oil on canvas.
Diameter visual size: 115 x 115 cm.
Canvas size: 119 x 119 cm.
France, end of 18th century/ about 1800th
In the elaborately designed, gilded partly painted frame with frieze decoration decorated with flower and leaf applications.
Painted as a tone representation on square canvas, in brightly shining colours, which correspond to the light above the clouds of the representation. In the centre the naked female figure, allegory of truth, who is undressed from a light-coloured cloth. On the right of the picture a torch-bearing genius to whom "truth" refers, as well as the female figure of Historia, the writing of history. Behind it the winged Fama. On the left an angel with spear and stick, probably to be understood as a glory that the truth makes manifest. As counter figures in the lower part of the picture diabolical figures, surrounded by snakes, who flee in the face of truth. (1221652) (11)
