第三世达赖喇嘛索南嘉措（1543-1588 年），为藏传佛教格鲁派著名大德。在其驻世期间，格鲁派得到了长足发展。他曾远赴蒙古弘传佛法，对藏传佛教在蒙古地区的传播起到了关键作用。大师本人也被俺答汗赠予“达赖喇嘛”尊号，开启了达赖喇嘛这一转世体系。此尊头部光洁无发，面庞圆润，眉眼平直，容貌清秀，以充满青春活力的慈悲青年形象向世人默默开示着佛法要意。上身内着僧坎，外披袈裟，袈裟上刻有华丽纹饰，富有装饰效果。左手持金刚铃，右手持有金刚杵，为上师的标志特征。下身厚重僧服覆盖住上师盘坐的双腿，双层织锦软垫承于大师身下，体现出大师作为教派领袖的尊贵地位。整像不论是规整严谨的做工，还是度量精确的躯体刻画，都展现出清代内地藏传造像的艺术特点，可谓清代内地造像的代表之作。
