9th-11th century AD. A large and heavy iron axehead with triangular-section blade widening to a broad curved edge with spur to the chin; D-shaped socket; mounted on a stand. Cf. Arbman, H. Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, pl.14(3"). 1.8 grams total, 21.5cm (8 1/2"). From a North West London collection; previously acquired in the 1980s.
