A William & Mary walnut and marquetry torchere stand, circa 1690, in the manner of Gerrit Jensen, the top with multi facetted edge, centred by a finely detailed marquetry scene of meandering floral branches and incorporating bone marquetry flowerheads, above a turned terminal and tapering hexagonal stem, all sides decorated with seaweed style marquetry depicting foliate branches, the concave sided base above three marquetry decorated downswept S scroll legs terminating in scroll feet, 78cm high, the top 38cm diameter A similar example is illustrated in Bowett "English Furniture 1660-1714 From Charles II to Queen Anne, page 1279 at fig 9:10. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old chips and splits commensurate with age and use. Various old repairs and replacements to veneer. Some old worm holes in areas of the stem, and legs/ feet which has largely been disguised by filler. Some other old losses disguised by small areas of filler. The moulded element at the top of the stem has previously been broken and glued. The rectangular block joining the stem to the underside of the top is a later associated element. The colouring of the stem area seems uniform in comparison to other and could be improved by sympathetic restoration. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.
