A George II silver shaped circular salver by John Swift, London 1746, with a raised scroll and rocaillework rim, engraved with a shield, on three scroll and shell feet, 31cm (12in) diameter, 990g (31.85 oz) The arms for the KIDSTON family, whose earliest known origin (mid 15C) is in Logie, Stirlingshire. Later they were merchants and ship owners in Glasgow, where they set up a timber exporting company and still later (from the 1830s) were identified as a philanthropic family of Helensburgh. A branch of the family settled in America before independence.
