A George III silver vase shape ewer by Thomas Evans, London 1775, with an ovoid finial to the dome centred cover, a raffia covered S-scroll handle, a beaded rim and girdle, on a pedestal with a square base, 34.5cm (13 1/2in) high, 1247g (40.1 oz) gross the arms for Thomas Holdsworth NEWMAN (1740-1802) and his wife Sarah PAGE (born 1757). Blazon (corrected) : (sable), three demi lions argent (Newman) - impaling - sable, a fess argent between three doves or (Page) Crest: a lion rampant argent Thomas Holdsworth NEWMAN was the son and heir of Robert NEWMAN (1704-1774) by Mary HOLDSWORTH (1710-1774) of Dartmouth, Devon. He married in 1774 in Oporto, Portugal Sarah PAGE daughter of John PAGE of Dartmouth. His son and heir was Sir Robert William NEWMAN (1776-1848) was born at Oporto, Portugal and from 1823 lived at Mamhead House, Devon having purchased the manor there. Condition Report: Marks to body and cover are lightly rubbed. There is play to the cover hinge and a gap to one side on the cover. Does not wobble on foot. Engraving is crisp.
