λ André-Vincent Becquerel (French, 1893-1981), Lièvre Boulant, a patinated bronze model of a somersaulting hare, Susse Frères foundry, circa 1930, the loosely modelled hare above an integral rectangular plinth variously inscribed 'A. BECQUEREL', 'cire perdue', and Susse Frs Edts Paris, 11.5cm high overall, 15cm wide Becquerel attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts and worked in the studios of fellow animal sculptor Prosper Lecourtier (see lot 865 of this auction) and Charles Valton. He was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon from around 1914, and throughout the remainder of his long, prolific career. Becquerel's models, which were usually cast by the Susse foundry, are characterised by their Art Deco-influenced modernity as well as a sense of being suspended in motion. The present lot, which captures the hare mid-somersault, is a striking example of this.
