A gold-lacquer rounded rectangular ryoshibako (document box) and cover Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century The inrobuta (flush-fitting lid) with a rich e-nashiji ground decorated in shades of gold and shell takamaki-e with highlights of kirikane with trailing flowering bush clover, the design continuing over the lid and over all four sides of the box, beneath a gold-lacquer 16-petalled kikumon (chrysanthemum crest) appearing prominently on the lid, the interior and underside of rich nashiji, the rims mounted with silver, two sides of the box applied with a silver and gold chrysanthemum crest fitted with a silvered-metal ring attachment to accommodate the purple silk cords; unsigned; with a lacquered-wood storage box. 14cm x 25.5cm x 19.5cm (5½in x 10in x 7 5/8in).
