A lacquered-wood rectangular box and cover with matching tray Attributed to Koda Shuetsu (1881-1933) and Miki Hyoetsu I (1887-1979), probably Taisho era (1912-1926), early 20th century The exterior of the box decorated in gold hiramaki-e with sprays of karakusa ('Chinese grasses') on the four black-lacquered corners of the inrobuta (flush-fitting lid), the inside of the lid and box embellished in gold takamaki-e with profuse windswept autumnal grasses of kikyo (Chinese bellflowers), ominaeshi (valerian) and susuki (plume grass), the underside of sparse nashiji; the tray with a continuation of the karakusa design, both unsigned, with a wood tomobako storage box inscribed [..] akikusa maki-e Shunkeinuri makitabako bontsuki (Shunkei lacquer [transparent lacquer on yellow- or red-stained wood] tobacco box and a tray with design of autumnal foliage in maki-e), signed inside the lid Maki-e shi: Koda Shugetsu (Maki-e artist: Koda Shugetsu); Nushi: Hyogetsu tsukuru (Lacquerer: Made by Hyogetsu), above the seal for each artist.
