A PAIR OF GILT-LACQUERED HARDWOOD FIGURES OF DAOIST IMMORTALS, MING DYNASTY
China, 16th-17th century. Each finely carved seated with the hands clasped in front shrouded by wide sleeves, wearing long flowing robes, dressed in official’s caps with beaded decoration and layers of draped robes with sashes, the backs revealing small hollowed and lidded consecratory chambers. (2)
Provenance: From an ancient aristocratic private collection in Vienna, Austria, and thence by descent in the same family.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, losses to wood and lacquer gilding, age cracks, signs of weathering and erosion, chips. Each with a metal hook of later date attached to the back. The consecratory chambers to the interior are empty.
