(S.R.), JOHN WALKER, 1 SOUTH MOLTON ST, LONDON to centre, with steel hands set behind hinged cast brass bezel incorporating silvered canted insert to interior, with turned wooden surround and secured with pegs to the rear box case incorporating door to right hand side and pendulum access flap to the curved underside, the backboard stamped 5317, S.W.26,5cm (10.5ins) diameter, 14cm (5.5ins) deep.The London clockmaking firm John Walker was founded by a maker of that name at 40 Princes Street, Leicester Square in 1836. After working from several addresses on Princes Street Walker relocated to 68 Cornhill in 1868 and maintained premises on the Strand 1864-75. John Walker was known as a chronometer and watch maker who was awarded prize medals in 1862 and 67; and, for a railway guard's watch, in 1875. Walker died in 1880 leaving the biness in the hands of his successors who relocated to 1 South Molton Street in 1906. The firm then finally moved to 64 South Molton Street in 1981 from where they still operate mostly as a service/repair-based biness.Records held at the National Railway Meum, York, confirm that the present timepiece (5317, 8 inch, J. Walker) was ed at Clapham Junction in District Lounge Room No. 5 up until at least December 1962.
