In the dedication Brindley writes of his "admiration of, and esteem for, a mind of so gigantic an order, as your valuable Works indicate; replete as they are with vivid descriptions, sublime imagery, deep and genuine pathos, sterling humour, pure philosophy, and profound knowledge of human life...". On 26 June Dickens had written to Brindley "My dear Sir, in consequence of your book and kind letter having been sent to my publishers, (whose parcels addressed to me accumulate until there is a great heap to be opened) I have only just now received them. I need not assure you that this is the sole cause of this present tardy acknowledgement of your glowing dedication. Although it puts my modesty to the blush and makes it very rosy indeed, I am truly obliged to you for your earnest and fervent tribute... I shall not forget your request with which I am delighted to comply. My booksellers will find means of forwarding to you a couple of Volumes, which pray, put on your shelves in remembrance of me" (The Letters of Charles Dickens, Pilgrim Edition, vol.3, p.515). Dickens sent this volume, and also a copy of Barnaby Rudge.Provenance: Thomas Bardel Brindley, author's presentation inscription; Frederick Seymore Winston, bookplate; Sotheby's New York, February 1986, lot 93; Sotheby's, 9 December 2014, lot 536.
