A FINE GILT-WOOD STATUE OF KANNONJapan, 17th to early 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Depicted standing on a circular lotus base, itself resting on a shishi, hands in abhayamudra and varadamudra, dressed in a monastic robe with voluminous folds, the hair capped in a high bun and adorned with a finely incised copper tiara. The face showing a calm expression with downcast almond-shaped eyes, neatly inlaid in inside-painted glass under arched eyebrows, a slender nose, and a benevolent smile, the ears with long lobes. The urna inlaid in transparent crystal.HEIGHT 40 cmCondition: The mandorla lost. The bolt connecting the base with the statue is modern. Some losses and minor old repairs. Wear, age cracks, flaking to lacquer and traces of use, overall as expected and commensurate with age. Displays very well.Provenance: From a noted French private estate.
