A FINE GILT-WOOD STATUE OF KANNONJapan, 17th to early 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Depicted standing on a circular lotus base, itself resting on a shishi, hands in abhayamudra and varadamudra, dressed in a monastic robe with voluminous folds, the hair capped in a high bun and adorned with a finely incised copper tiara. The face showing a calm expression with downcast almond-shaped eyes, neatly inlaid in inside-painted glass under arched eyebrows, a slender nose, and a benevolent smile, the ears with long lobes. The urna inlaid in transparent crystal.HEIGHT 40 cmCondition: The mandorla lost. The bolt connecting the base with the statue is modern. Some losses and minor old repairs.
