Italian school; circa 1600."Holy Family".Oil on copper. It has slight faults on the pictorial surface. It has a Spanish frame with faults, c.1750.Measurements: 34 x 26,5 cm; 55 x 45 cm (frame). As it is usual in the images of the Virgin and Child, the mother is arranged as a throne for the little Jesus in the foreground. In this work the artist follows the same pictorial tradition, but gives greater prominence to the figure of Saint Joseph, who, despite being in the background, holds a piece of fruit in his hands, which the gesture of the Child seems to be requested by the Saviour. This gesture shows us how the little Jesus focuses all his attention on the figure of his father, a novel and enlightening characteristic of the times that religion was going through at that time, since due to the crisis the relevance of Joseph as the putative father in the formation of his son was strengthened, thus proliferating images such as Joseph and Jesus at the waist, or Saint Joseph with the Child. Another characteristic feature of this work is the substitution of the Virgin's mother, Saint Anne, for that of her father Saint Joachim. In the most common sense of the expression, the Holy Family includes the closest relatives of the Child Jesus, i.e. mother and grandmother or mother and nurturing father. In both cases, whether it is Saint Anne or Saint Joseph who appears, it is a group of three figures. From an artistic point of view, the arrangement of this terrestrial Trinity poses the same problems and suggests the same solutions as the heavenly Trinity. However, the difficulties are fewer. It is no longer a question of a single God in three persons, whose essential unity must be expressed at the same time as his diversity. The three personages are united by a blood link, certainly, but they do not constitute an indivisible block. Moreover, all three are represented in human form.
