Novo-Hispanic or Spanish school; 17th century."Virgin and Child".Oil on canvas. Re-enteled.Presents restorations. Size: 98 x 74 cm; 108 x 82,5 cm (frame). The artist of this work has conceived a painting of great theatricality, where craftsmanship and art share the limelight. This is because the frame creates a sinuous form to which the canvas adapts harmoniously. As for the aforementioned theatricality, this characteristic can be seen in the presence of the curtain that opens to reveal the interior to the viewer, in the manner of a theatrical stage. In addition, the Virgin and Child are placed on a pedestal in such a way that their figures are monumentalised to a greater extent and take on greater prominence in the scene. Both figures are dressed in rich robes and display a magnificent version of the Christian religion, crowned and adorned with pearls and other jewels, the Virgin holding a sceptre as Queen of Heaven, while the Child holds in his hand the orb, which identifies him as Salvatore Mundi.Aesthetically, the work is reminiscent of aesthetic patterns that occurred in Spanish America and in the artistic relations between Spain and the New Continent. It is worth mentioning that, during Spanish colonial rule, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local painters were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography. The most frequent models were harquebusier angels and triangular virgins; however, in the early years of the 19th century, at the time of independence and political openness in some of the colonies, several artists began to depict a new model of painting with its own identity.
