Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, 26th to 31st Dynasty, ca. 664 to 332 BCE. A beautiful jar of a spherical form, hand-carved from white alabaster with pale brown veining throughout. The vessel has a round but stable base, a pair of integral suspension lugs with vertically drilled string holes, a sloped shoulder that narrows to a corseted neck, and a flared rim surrounding the gaping mouth. The walls of the jar have been carved to a thinness that allows a small amount of light through to the opposite side while illuminating the natural veining within the stone matrix. The exterior surfaces of the vessel exhibit a polished texture as well as smooth patina that give this vessel an attractive presentation evocative of ancient Egyptian splendor.
