The women of the Kuna People of Panama in the San Blas Islands are known for their needlework and design, creating brightly-colored, layered fabric art in a cutaway technique known as reverse appliqué. Originally featuringplex geometric patterns and depictions of the natural world, more recent mola art includes contemporary figuration, such as this fanciful and joyous piece, which resided atop the built-in cabinets in Justice Ginsburg's study. From 1973 – 1978, Professor Ginsburg (then at Columbia Law) was engrossed In a legal case involving gender discrimination against federal workers in Panama. This item is likely a gift from the period celebrating her success as a litigator in Stevenson vs. Castles. For more information, see
