He made a considerable fortune on the Stock Exchange and began to collect pictures and art works on a large scale in 1878. He left his collection to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A closely related brushrest with similar decoration, dated as 16th/17th century, is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (acc.no.C.120-1939).
