Silk with textured roundel patterns, multi-colored silk threads, inside with silk lining, three fabric buttons and loops at the front. China, late Qing Dynasty
This dark yellow informal Waitao domestic lady’s jacket was most certainly worn for birthday celebrations as garments featuring the crane, a classical symbol for longevity, oftentimes served this purpose. It shows colorful embroidery decoration standing out prominently against the patterned background. The embroideries depict flower baskets and smaller floral arrangements. The hems at the lower part, front, collar and sleeves are featuring a broad, band embroidered with cranes amidst clouds and bats. Light silk bands embroidered with flowers, butterflies and herons round off the sleeves.
