A COPPER ALLOY SEATED BUDDHANORTHERN THAILAND, 16TH-19TH CENTURY 8 1/4 in. (21 cm) high 泰國北部 十六至十九世紀 佛陀銅像 Like many Northern Thai Buddha images, this sculpture integrates stylistic traits associated with various ethnic gro inhabiting the region. For example, the robe covering both shoulders and the Buddha's squarish face with broad lips nod to Mon images of the Haripunchai kingdom. The legs folded one over the other in 'half lotus' posture and the stout figural proportions evoke Thai images of the Sukhothai and Lan Na kingdoms, respectively. And the hexagonal base with upturned tips and the prominent conical ushnisha assimilatemon features of Shan images from Burma. However, unlike most Northern Thai Buddha images, depicting the sage in the Maravijaya pose, this sculpture seats him in contemplative meditation. pare with a seated Buddha sold in Sotheby's, Paris, 11 December 2020, lot 99.
