AN ILLUSTRATION FROM A RAGAMALA SERIES: BHAIRVA RAGANORTHERN DECCAN, PERHAPS AURANGABAD, 1670-80 Opaque pigments with gold; Numbered 4 in the upper margin and inscribed in the panel with the Sanskrit verse describing Bhairava raga in Kshemakarna's system, translated, "Clad in white and with white limbs, bearing the crescent moon on his head, having a buffalo horn and the lotus face of Shiva, his hair in matted locks, with the poison in his neck, this is Bhairava with red eyes; he carries his trident and a skull, wears earrings in the form of lotuses in his ears, his hair is in matted locks, his praises are sung by gods and ganas in the morning in autumn".
