A Chinese celadon jade 'Marriage' bowl, 18th century, the broad rounded sides resting on three low ruyi-head feet and rising to a slightly incurved rim, set with a pair of bat-shaped handles each suspending a loose ring, the centre of the interior worked in high relief with peach, pomegranate and finger citrus, 15cm long x 11cm wide x 3.4cm high Provenance: Property of a lady and by family descent This type of vessel is known as a 'marriage' bowl, and such bowls, with their carefully chosen auspicious decoration were popular at the Imperial Qing court. Handles on marriage bowls are most commonly carved as bats or dragons. The motif of peach, pomegranate and finger citrus is also a popular choice symbolising fertility and fortune.
