A rare Chinese Famille Verte square dish , early Kangxi, circa 1680, the shallow sides rising to flat rims and resting on low, wide conforming foot, the interior decorated with a butterfly and grasshopper above pierced rockwork, large leaves and flowering plants, the exteriors with various floral sprays, the base with a four-character mark of Yu Hai Tang zhi , 'Made for the Hall of the Jade Sea' in black enamel within a double square, 13.2cm square Compare with a similar example illustrated, Michael Beurdeley and Guy Raindre, 1987 , Qing Porcelain , p.83, pg.84, and two related trays painted with insects, rockwork and flowering plants illustrated by John Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in the Baur Collection , 2, nos. 153, 154, collection no.
