(Stockbridge 1756-1823 Edinburgh), Dr. Nathaniel Spens in the Uniform of the Royal Company of Archers, engraving by John Beugo and published Feb 1796, 67cm x 45cm (2) James Spens, 2nd Baron of Craigsanquhar, 1761-1840, was admitted to the Royal Company of Archers in 1790. By repute he presented a china bowl in 1793 which was won by his brother, Dr Thomas Spens. However, it is said Dr Spens refused to accept it and Colonel Maxwell, who came 2nd in the competition, was awarded the prize. James Spens is thought to have then given two further bowls, the third and last being in 1799. The Royal Company's traditions relate to its reason for formation, the archery competition. To further this, it offered prizes that were competed for annually and many are retained to the present day.
