Holy family on the run. Flemish, circa 1500. 26.5x24x5.5 cm. Oak, worked in relief. On a patch of grass, the group of four figures rises up from Bethlehem to Egypt on their flight from King Herod. Mary is sitting on a donkey with little Jesus wrapped in a baby's paw wrapped in a blanket. Josef, holding a stick with luggage in his hand, stands to the left behind it. Remains of the original version, several times overlooked. The two little angels formed the coronation of a larger group, e.g. a coronation of Mary. To glorify the event, they are represented with instruments. Monumental Roman Lion. Northern Italy, probably 12th/13th century. 77x204x38 cm. Lying lion made of limestone, fully round. Crouching in a straight posture on a rectangular plinth, head and front legs frontally aligned. With richly falling, flaky mane. Lateral notches as transport brackets. Aged, best. The large reclining lion figures are mainly found in pairs in northern Italy as column supports for the portals of Romanesque churches and cathedrals. Nice comparisons are the lions at the cathedrals of Verona, Modena or Parma. The lion presented here does not show any traces of fastening on its back, so that it was probably not used to support a column or any other architectural element.

Romanesque holy figure. Southern Europe, probably Spain, end of the 12th/beginning of the 13th century. H. 80 cm. Walnut, flattened on the back. Standing figure of a saint with a book, the right hand with the further attribute is missing. Slenderly formed figure, the robe with hip belt falls straight down in vertical folds, the hair is slightly hinted under a forehead cap. She wears a head veil under a strikingly large crown, once provided with 4 large crown teeth. The wood is originally covered with canvas and several layers of original primer. Few oral findings under later version and incarnation. The robe and headscarf are patterned after Romanesque models in red, blue and white. Severe damage due to old age, missing parts. In addition a modern pedestal. Throne Madonna and Child. Northern Italy, probably Friuli, second half of the 15th century. H. 71 cm. Hardwood/lime, strongly hollowed on the back. Madonna enthroned on a wooden bench, her gaze directed to the front. The baby Jesus sits on her right leg, her body facing to the left. Remains of old setting and incarnate parts. Ignored. Hands and feet partly missing, bench worked off at the sides. Age-related damage. Head caddy set old. Metal crown later. In a further comparison, an enthroned Madonna and Child, which can be attributed to Martino Mioni di Tolmezzo on the basis of a signature. Today it is located in the Musei Civici in Udine. The same style is reflected in the overall attitude. The child in the Madonna of Mioni is clothed and sits on her left knee, but shows the same posture of legs and arms.

Saint Simon Zelotes. North German, late 15th century. H. 62 cm. Oak, slightly rounded back and brown varnished. Standing Saint Simon from an apostle cycle with his attribute, the saw. Right hand and lower part of the saw is missing. Partially revised and minor additions. Aged. Provenance: From the collection of a Southern German physician and art lover. Simon is called Zelotes (Gospel of Luke 6:15) - in German the Zealot - because he probably originally belonged to the politically radical movement of the Zealots, who wanted to expel the Roman rulers from Israel by force. He is mentioned as one of the disciples of Jesus. According to the story, Simon worked together with Judas Taddeus in Mesopotamia and Persia (Babylon), where they worked miracles to incur the wrath of the magicians and priests there and had Simon tortured to death with a saw.

Stein, Jörg - gen. Master of Tiefenbronn (workshop). worked in Ulm 1453 - 1491, c. 1470/75. h. 77 cm. Saint Dorothea. Willow wood, heavily hollowed on the back. Formerly set and covered with brown glaze. Partially original inlaid sections. Supplements, age damage, rest. Former shrine figure of a winged altar. Looking to the right, she stood heraldically to the left of the central figure. Provenance: Private collection U.S.A. Acquired at Auktionshaus Lempertz, auction 920, Cologne, May 17, 2008, lot 1182, mentioned there from a private collection from the Rhine region Formerly the G. Voß Collection, Berlin (documented in the Fotoarchiv Marburg), certainly the art historian Georg Voß (1854-1932). Expert opinion by Dr. Miller, Ottobrunn, 21.7.2010. Excerpts of the report state: "This is a characteristic work from the workshop of the sculptor Jörg Stein, who can be traced back to Ulm between 1453 and 1491. The closest relative is the figure of St. Barbara in the parish church of Hochwang near Günzburg (cf. Fig. 1)" - "With regard to the facial type and the organisation of the wrinkles, the Madonna in the parish church of Schweinhausen near Biberach is also easily comparable (cf. Fig. 2)" - "With regard to the width of the figures and the accentuated curve of the hips, a small Madonna in private ownership is best compared. (Cf. Fig. 3)

Buonarotti, Michelangelo (after). Caprese 1475 - 1564 Rome, Italy or France, 19th century L. 65 cm. Allegory of day and night. After the figures on the tomb of Giuliano de' Medici from the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo in Florence. Bronze, dark patinated. Figures lying on volute arches, rectangular bases with leaf branch applications, lion heads and ornamentation on plastic claw feet at the front and slender feet with peg knobs at the back. L. ber. In 1520 Michelangelo Buonarotti was commissioned by Pope Leo X (born in 1475 as Giovanni de' Medici) to build the New Sacristy of San Lorenzo. In addition to building the church, he also designed the entire architectural sculpture, including the two famous tombs of the brothers Lorenzo and Giuliano de' Medici. Both tombs consist of three figures, each with two deities or allegories at the feet of the deceased in an idealized representation. The allegory of the night on the tomb of Giuliano is represented by a female figure with an owl, the male figure as counterpart as an allegory of the day.

Signed "G.ZOFFOLI.F:" on the front of the plinth and "APICTEAC.KAI.HAHTAC AIPOAEICEIC" on the side. Bronze, dark brown patinated. 33x23x10 cm, plus red marble base 12x25x11 cm. Socket with min. chips. Provenance: Formerly from an old Luxembourg private collection. The Furietti centaurs were found in 1736 by Giuseppe Alessandro Furietti (1684-1764) during excavations at Handrian's villa. They are now in the Capitoline Museums in Rome.

Scourged Christ. Sicily, 17th century. H. 51 cm. Sicilian pink alabaster with grey "veins". Nearly full-round figure of Christ sitting on a kind of rock base, the upper part of the body turned in the opposite direction to the crossed arms. The inner wall with red cold painting, on the outer wall remains of golden ornamental decoration. Roughly finished on the back and with additions in the base area. Partial l. rest. and best. With an essay by Dr. Charles Avery, Girton, Cambrige, 10 March 2015, Avery presents some comparative examples of the pink alabaster figure presented here. An Ecce Homo, very similar in posture, but designed as a standing figure, exists in a private collection not further specified by Dr. Avery. A half-figure of a flagellated man, ending below the loincloth and conceived either as a sitting or standing figure, was called up at Christie's in New York in 2004. There was also a very similar figure in pink alabaster with grey "veins" at Phillips, London (8. 7. 1992).
