A SANDSTONE FIGURE OF VISHNU, ANGKOR PERIOD
Cambodia, Khmer style of Angkor Vat, Ca. Mid-12th century. Clad in a short sampot with neatly carved parallel pleats, secured by a jeweled belt and with a double-fishtail sash, his rounded face with delicately outlined lips, almond eyes, raised brows and long pendulous earlobes, the hair arranged in a conical chignon and fronted by a foliate tiara.
Provenance: Private collection of Douglas Latchford, London, England, acquired in 1967. A private collector, acquired from the above via Spink & Son in 1999. A copy of the original certificate of provenance, dated June 7th 1999, is accompanying this lot. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, dated 1/17/13, confirming the dating of the present statue to “Cambodia, Angkor Period, Khmer style of Angkor Vat, Ca. Mid-12th century” is accompanying this lot.
Condition: Extensive weathering and wear, minor dents, nicks and losses as visible on the images. Overall fine condition, especially when considering the age of this statue.
