Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals including three accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (T-874) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 46 x 45 x 16mm. This bears the shape of the design, with flat face, flat back, and handle on the back of inverted V-shape. The design, which is both compartmented and open-work, consists of a central Greek cross, each arm of which is also the arm of another less regular Greek cross, and these outer four crosses are joined by four crescents at their side tips. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has an interesting design, but the handle is worn and the crescents are badly dented. The metal is sound.'; (T-820) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 34 x 47 x 24mm. This has the shape of what is depicted: a bird on the wing with head at the front, wings spread, and tail feathers behind. The face is flat, compartmented and partly open-work. The back is also flat and supports a stout stalk handle ending in a pierced loop. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2200-1800 B.C. It is a rare design, and the piece is in very good condition, the metal having been conserved.'; (R-716) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 66 x 69 x 21mm. This is round, with flat face and flat back, on which is mounted a handle of inverted U-shape. The design consists of a simple cross within an outer band, and each quarter so created is filled with two V-shapes, one under the other. There is decoration on the back. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is slightly dented on the outer rim, but otherwise it is in very good condition.'; one discoid with openwork design divided into quarters, each filled with four diagonal zig-zag lines meeting a compartmented square to the centre, scalloped border and inverted V-shape handle to the reverse; one formed as four snakes, each with S-shaped body forming four quarters of a circular shape, tails to the centre, heads to the border, handle to the reverse. 178 grams total. 47-64mm (2-2 1/2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers T-874, Y-904, T-820, Y-911, R-716, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
