Late 3rd-2nd millennium BC. A mixed group of five bronze seals comprising: one discoid with openwork design of a quadruped, head turned back, part of the rim now absent; and four accompanied by typed and signed notes by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which state: (R-768) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 36 x 32 x 9mm. This is the shape of the creatures depicted, and has a flat compartmented face, and flat back, on which a broad handle of sheet metal of inverted U-shape is mounted. The creature is a standing quadruped with sharp upturned snout and spikes along its back. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has a rare design and is in quite good condition.'; (T-196) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 42 x 24 x 13mm. This has the shape of what is depicted, namely a heraldic eagle and two snakes. The face is flat and compartmented and the back is also flat with a handle of inverted V-shape mounted on it. The eagle has head at the top, wings spread with tips raised, and body and tail feathers appear below in stylized form. The snakes' bodies curve above and below the bird, beginning at the back and ending with their heads at the front of the bird. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design. The metal is in good condition, but the piece is a little bent and the edges bent in places.'; (U-183) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 42 x 39 x 7mm. This is roughly round, but bears the shape of the design, which is hollowed out in the face with some open-work, and is also repeated on the back in relief with some engraving. the design shows three birds standing with wings raised and each holding a big curling snake in its beak. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a rare design, perhaps unique, and the type with design repeated on the back is rare. However, the piece is worn.'; (K-56) 'Stamp Seal of Bronze, 54 x 48 x 10mm. This has an irregular shape with four extensions at roughly the four corners. The flat face has an engraved design, the back has a pattern of seven intertwining coils, perhaps meant as a snake, with a central pierced loop. The design on the face shows a standing quadruped with big horns and a shape below its body. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is generally in good condition, the metal having been conserved.' 95 grams total, 37-54mm (1 1/2-2"). The Signo collection, the property of a West London businessman, formed in the late 1980s-early 1990s; collection numbers K-56, R-768, T-196, U-183, Y-858, academically researched and catalogued by the late Professor Lambert in the early 1990s.
