Y A holly and kingwood marquetry writing box, late 17th/ early 18th century, in the manner of Gerrit Jensen, decorated with marquetry on all exterior sides incorporating scrolling foliate branches, with rosewood interior, the lid revolving to form a writing slope, with a velvet inset surface, within a foliate marquetry banded edge, 7cm high, 31cm wide, 25cm deep Gerrit Jensen, was re-appointed 'Cabbinet maker in Ordinary' to the Crown in 1689. Jensen's career spanned nearly half a century, from 1667 to 1714, so his work between 1689 and 1702 represented only a small part of his output. His work is, however, well documented and a number of pieces attributed to Jensen survive in the Royal Collection. Jensen's name is closely linked to the decorative technique of arabesque marquetry as displayed by this writing box.
