A MONUMENTAL AMERICAN EARTHENWARE VASE DESIGNED BY MARIA LONGWORTH NICHOLS FOR ROOKWOOD, CINCINNATI, 1883 of baluster form a monumental vase in Limoges style and ginger clay, decorated with panels of oriental flowers and spiders crawling down their webs intersected by diagonal ribbons with a fire-on-glob honeycomb motif, the neck similarly chased, impressed with date and factory mark: G Rookwood 1883; overall height: 71 cm (28 in.) LITERATURE cf. Everson Museum of Art, Fragile Blossoms, Enduring Earth, 1989, pl. 37, p. 71 for an illustration of this model. CONDITION The vase appears in good condition. Fine, stable and age-appropriate craquelure overall. Inspection under UV shows variant fluorescence in two 5-mm areas, one to the right of, another below the dangling spider, possibly stabilizing craquelure; no apparent signs of overpainting. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale. Please note that any condition statement regarding works of art is given as a courtesy to our clients in order to assist them in assessing the condition.
