A 18 ans, le jeune Fathi Afifi obtient son premier emploi dans une usine, où il pointe avec vingt mille autres ouvriers. En arrivant pour la première fois, on lui dit : “Oublie ton nom, ici tu es un numéro”. Plus de quatre décennies plus tard, son art est célébré pour sa description de l’effet déshumanisant de l’industrie sur l’esprit humain, qu’il exprime dans son style unique, mêlant réalisme et accents surréalistes. L’atmosphère sombre et cinématographique de son oeuvre rappelle le chef-d’oeuvre Metropolis de Fritz Lang (1927) et l’art du maître sud-africain William Kentridge. Et pourtant, Afifi est né à Sayeda Zainab, dans le vieux Caire, un quartier où il est né, vit et peint encore aujourd’hui. Alors que les quartiers de la vieille ville sont connus pour leurs festivals et leurs bâtiments historiques, l’oeuvre de Fathi Afifi est une chronique visuelle de l’Égypte au fil des décennies, du point de vue singulier de la classe ouvrière. Au fil de la journée, il y avait de moins en moins de travailleurs par équipe. Inspiré par les machines et les opérateurs, il puise dans son environnement pour créer ses tableaux. La première dépeint l’usine, vue de l’extérieur, chose rare pour l’artiste, comme une présence omnipotente, dominant le travailleur qui s’approche du bâtiment ou s’en éloigne, de nuit. Over four decades later, his art is celebrated for its depiction of the dehumanising effect of industry on the human spirit, which he expresses in his unique style, mixing realism with surrealist accents. The dark, cinematic atmosphere of his work is reminiscent of Fritz Lang’s 1927 masterpiece Metropolis, and of the art of South African master William Kentridge. And yet, Afifi was born in Sayeda Zainab in Old Cairo, a neighbourhood where he was born and still lives and paints today. Whereas the old city quarters are known for their festivals and historic buildings, Fathi Afifi’s work is a visual chronicle of Egypt over the decades, as seen from the singular perspective of the working class. In 2016 Egypt celebrated his achievements by presenting a solo exhibition of his work at the national Ofok exhibition hall. His experience working at the factory inspired the subject matter of his paintings – the factory. Afifi paints what he perceives as the connection between the factory worker and the operating machine – a symbiotic relationship. He animates a machine taking on form, a cyborg, and depicts the Human in different situations in the working day. He says "The machine is eternal – everlasting. The Human is mortal – lives or dies and retires from work". At the factory, the artist recalls that the first shift of the day was always crowded. As the day went by, there were less and less workers per shift. Afifi always picked the last shift of the day, a time when he could truly absorb his surroundings, forming ideas for his artistic practice. Inspired by the machines and the operators, it became the source he drew from to create the paintings. In this sale, Piasa is offering one work on canvas: The Factory Building, Night Shift, 2016 and an important early drawing, Factory Machines and Workers, 1995, both exemplary of Afifi’s research. The first demonstrates the gigantic size of the factory and its imposing presence as the worker approaches the building at night. The second depicts the mechanical layout of the factory inside – each machine and an operator as a unit that repeats itself.
