Spanish school of the 19th century. Following models by JUAN DE PAREJA (Antequera, c. 1610-Madrid, 1670). "Portrait of José Ratés". Oil on canvas. Size: 107 x 83 cm. The work in question follows the models of the portrait of José Ratés painted by Juan de Pareja, a Spanish Baroque painter of Moorish origin and a slave of Velázquez, in whose workshop he trained. Palomino wrote of this work: "he had a singular skill for portraits, of which I have seen some very excellent ones, such as that of José Ratés in which the manner of Velázquez is so well known that many consider it to be his own". The original portrait by Ratés, executed around 1670, is housed in the Seville Museum of Fine Arts. Dimensions 107 x 83 cm.
