Ancient Near East, Parthia, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE; Roman, Imperial Period, 1st to 3rd century CE; Central Europe, Visigothic Kingdom, ca. 7th to 8th century CE; Near East, Byzantine Period, ca. 5th to 10th century CE. A stunning ensemble of 5 rings: a Parthian leaded brass ring, a Roman bronze and glass ring, a Byzantine brass ring, a Byzantine silver and glass ring, and a Visigothic brass ring. First, the Parthian leaded brass ring is of the Henig Xb type and displays a slender band and an oversized, ovoid face incised with the design of a mounted and helmeted warrior holding a lance. Next, the Roman bronze ring features an elliptic bezel containing a red glass intaglio of a standing figure surrounded by 4 quadrupeds. Size of exterior of largest: 1.2" Diameter (3 cm); size of bezel of largest: 0.8" Diameter (2 cm); silver quality: 86.9%; weight of silver ring: 8.4 grams; US ring sizes: 10 (Byzantine brass), 9.5 (Visigothic), 6 (Byzantine silver), 5.5 (Roman), and 5.25 (Parthian).Third, the Byzantine brass ring exhibits a convex band and flattened, circular face embellished by a design of a cross with arms that trifurcate at the ends amongst 4 ancient runes. Alternatively, the Byzantine silver ring boasts a sizeable, protuberant bezel hand-crafted from navy and cobalt Venetian glass in a setting of repeated trefoils affixed to an attenuated band. Last, the Visigothic brass ring presents a thick band and raised, annular bezel, both intricately incised with abstract, striated motifs.
