**Originally Listed At $1200** East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A splendid and sizeable sculpture, skillfully hand-carved from a single piece of chocolate brown-hued wood to display the image of a male dancer beneath a tree. Wearing a flat cap, a robe tied at the waist, pants, and slippers, the jovial figure poses dynamically, balancing on his right foot as he carries a petite object in his left hand and raises his right hand high above his head. His cheerful visage turns slightly to the right, displaying slender eyes beneath high arching brows, a broad nose, a short moustache, a spirited smile, and a pointed chin, all flanked by a pair of lengthy ears. A tall tree towers above him with its sinuous branches stretching outward and lengthy leaves drooping so low that they nearly graze his cap. Note the artist s careful attention to detail, evident in the openwork ornaments that embellish the figure s headdress, the zigzag hems of his robe, and the textured bark of the tree. Size: 9.5" W x 26.8" H (24.1 cm x 68.1 cm); 28.4" H (72.1 cm) on included custom stand. Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-M. Kobiashi collection, Hawaii, USA, 1960 to 2000 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
