**Originally Listed At $1000** East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. This is a massive brass censer vessel, cast in a large cauldron shape and adorned with Buddhist imagery. The pot rests on three conical feet cast separately and threaded through the vessel s base. A pair of sturdy strap handles are riveted to the upper shoulder of the body, decorated with scrolling clouds. The midsection is etched with a rotund reclining Budai or the Laughing Buddha, and 2 children, highlighted with red pigments, the opposite side contains Budai s money sack under a tree with a few strewn coins. Tripod censers such as this were used in many Chinese homes for burning incense or holding offerings. Budai is the wandering Buddha associated with fortune, and joy - his joy comes from the presence of others, especially children, as depicted here, and he is almost always portrayed with a large sack often filled with money that represents abundance.
