**Originally Listed At $1000** Native American, Midwest to Southeastern United States, Caddo / Mississippian, ca. 1200 to 1800 CE. A beautiful and sizable example of a hand-built pottery bowl exhibiting a round yet stable base, thick walls that swell upwards to form the profile, an indented shoulder, and an overhanging rim. The shoulder is adorned with a quartet of protruding lugs that were perhaps used as strap guides, and a program of incised linear motifs adorns the exterior surfaces. The 4 nubs around the shoulder are perhaps representative of a four-pointed star or the 4 cardinal directions, and the incised decorations may have some celestial significance. Size: 9.2" Diameter x 4.3" H (23.4 cm x 10.9 cm) Provenance: ex-Alfred Stendahl, owner of Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, before 1990 All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
