A RARE PARCEL-GILT BRONZE 'FIVE SACRED PEAK' BRUSHRESTLate Ming Dynasty Crisply cast as five mountain peaks rising from crashing waves, one side with relief decoration of three carp, the reverse chased with two horses on crested waves, the base pierced with three openwork lozenges, the bronze with dark patina and areas of gilding. 15.2cm (6in) long. Furthermore, the carp in the waves refers to an old legend that carp in the Yellow River swim tream and those that successfully leap the Longmen Falls turn into dragons. This became a symbol for succeeding in the Imperial civil service examinations.
