A LARGE SILVER ALLOY REPOUSSÉ GAU WITH A TSATSA OF GREEN TARATIBET, CIRCA 18TH CENTURY Himalayan Art Resources item no. 1418 15 in. (38.1 cm) high 西藏 約十八世紀 銀合金錘揲綠度母擦擦嘎烏盒 Gaus are sacred receptacles serving many purposes in Tibetan daily life, including as a sign of social status and rank. They are mostmonly constructed from metal repoussé and made according to three different sizes. The small and medium sized gaus are portable. The largest of gaus, as seen here, were often placed within a home or temple. All hold sacred and auspicious objects including tsatsas which can often be seen, as in this instance, through a viewing window. Their purspose, as stated by Rhie and Thurman, "...served as a site where the wisdom emanation of that enlightened being could be invoked andmunicated with."
