A GILT BRONZE MAHASIDDHA VIRUPA, 16TH CENTURY
Tibet. Seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, his hands in dhyana mudra, clad in a short dhoti, wearing jewelry and a tiara inset with coral and turquoise beads, his face in serene expression with inlaid eyes.
Provenance: Alain Presencer Collection. The base with a label bearing a hand-written inscription reading “Mahasiddha Silver Eyes”. Alain Presencer devoted his life to the study and promotion of Tibetan Buddhism and culture. His contributions to the field resulted in numerous recognitions, including an appointment as Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. He also created the music album ‘The Singing Bowls of Tibet’, which sold over a million copies to date.
Condition: Wear to the gilding, traces of use and minor nicks as expected on a copper-bronze alloy statue of this age. Sealed. One of the inlaid beads and both silver inlays to the eyes are lost.

Mahasiddha Virupa, the Lord of all yogis, was born in a royal family in east India during the 7th-8th century. He later renounced the life of a prince to become a monastic.
Compare with the Virupa in the Gerd-Wolfgang Essen Tibetica Collection (Hamburg) pictured in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes (1981), cat. no. 131H, and the Virupa in the Victoria and Albert Museum, cat. no. 131I, both shown on page 475.
