YUAN Dynasty Chinese porcelain plate finely potted in shallow vessel form, with broad wide central interior, rounded cavetto gently tapering to open wide scalloped/barded rim. The central medallion reversed painted in cobalt-blue even tone with beautiful crane surrounded with various flower blooms, foliage and surrounded with wavy Lishui water. The outer central decorated with scrolling tendril and foliage interspersed with big Lotus blooms. The scalloped rim decorated with thrashing wavy Lishui water around the rim. The graceful crane is a common emblem in paintings. The name Gguan is used for both storks and cranes and the same symbolism applies to both. The crane symbolizes longevity as well as wisdom. It is fabled that when a crane reaches 600 years old it no longer needs to eat. It stands as a homophone for he âpeace, harmonyâ. An embroidery of a crane formed part of the regalia of the top rank of Imperial officials. âGuanâ sounds the same as Guan âofficialâ and Guan âhat, first placeâ so can symbolize the wish for promotion to a high official position. A crane is often portrayed with a tortoise (longevity) or a deer (longevity and riches). A stork often accompanies the Queen Mother of the West. The broad everted mouth rim all reserved in cobalt-blue underglaze, leaving the outer rim in plain white underglaze. The porcelain conformed all required specimen to be high valued Chinese porcelain wares, with finest material, the whiteness, the glaze, the drawing, and the shape. Without overlap the outlines of the design, well drew, clear, subtle, and distinct. The clay is fine and exquisite, the glaze smooth, brilliant with a moist appearance, the finishing meticulous. The base remain unglazed, revealed the spiral marks with creme-orange ground and dark brown-grayish firing spots marks.Measurements: 2-3/4" H x 16" Diam.PROVENANCE: From the private collections of Madame Kimball, of Boston, Massachusetts, by inheritance.
